‘Gender Against Men’ is an advocacy-oriented documentary exposing the hidden world of sexual and gender based violence against men in the conflicts of the Great Lakes Region of Africa. We are extremely proud to announce that this documentary won the prize for ‘BEST DOCUMENTARY’ at the Kenya International Film Festival which was held from 21 to 31 October 2009 under the theme ‘Celebrating Our Cultural Diversity Through Cinema’.

Sexual violence: Male rape as a tool of subjugation during war

Most of the victims of rape are women. However of recent, rape especially as a tool of war to subdue men, is on the increase. Men of Hope is an association under the Refugee Law Project trying to rehabilitate the lives of 150 men who have been raped by fellow males. Some of these victims were raped during attempts to quell armed struggle in northern Uganda after the NRM captured power in 1986.

Joseph’s story: activist in the Men of Hope Refugee Association, Uganda
This short film is part of a series of five testimonies from male survivor activists giving their perspective on responses to their experience of sexual violence. After he suffered conflict-related sexual violence in his home country, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Joseph fled to Uganda for safety. Today he is an activist in the Men of Hope Refugee Association, a group of Male Survivors of conflict-related sexual violence raising awareness on sexual violence against men and boys. The video was produced by the Video Advocacy Unit of the Refugee Law Project in Uganda. RLP is a partner in an IDS research project on collective action against sexual and gender-based violence.
